...Meeting them outside on the front lawn, it was exciting to see each of them proudly display their purchases and tell their classmates why they had chosen their particular item.

...I wondered how I was going to keep the attention of 30 or so elementary school kids and make our outreach interesting. ... They had very thought provoking questions, some better than I get from the adults that attend tours.

These kids understood that there were kids just like them that were going without the basics. ... Others wanted to know if they could go home and clean out their bedrooms and bring the clothes that no longer fit to us so that we could pass them along to a child in need.

...Talk to your kids and ask how they would like to get involved in the local community and “give back”. Volunteering as a family will spark in all of you a sense of belonging in the community and probably teach you a bit about what is going on in your back yard. When Hannah’s Treasure Chest was started just over ten years ago, I knew there was a need for children’s clothing in the Dayton area, what I didn’t know was the scope of that need. ...This particular United Way has no way of knowing if the employee made a “lump sum” donation or is having deductions taken from their check each payroll cycle. Therefore, I was informed that HTC would receive a check quarterly, less the 15% fee, when our allocation was $100 or more, or a period of time had passed.

...As well, I have offered for the local United Way to write a guest blog or to answer and respond to questions and comments posted to this particular blog as well as on my FaceBook page.

...The United Way of Greater Dayton learned about my blog post and asked that I post an update and let readers know that this fee is not normal for a United Way.

...Moreover, I wonder if the employer, who recommends donations through the United Way, knows how high the processing fees are and that of their portion of the donation, we received just over 10% of their matching funds.

The resulting donation will in fact clothe 22 children, but, had the United Way not been involved, 40 children would have received clothing.

Over the years, we have had many donors disappointed when they have found out what the “processing fees” taken out of their donation have been.

...I encourage you, please ask about the fees and where your donation is going before donating to any non-profit, or through any “service” that is soliciting your donation on behalf of other charities. You may be surprised where your money is going and what it is being spent on, even when you designate the full amount to a specific charity.

...Tebbe: This is Janell Tebbe, I am with Angela Addington and we are at Hannah’s Treasure Chest, it is Wednesday, February 16, at 10:00am.

Angela, how did you get involved with community issues in the Dayton area?

...Addington: I started actually because I moved here from South Bend, IN and at the time I was a professional photographer. I worked with a lot of non-profits in the South bend area and asked them for their equivalent here in Dayton. So I came with a little bit of a charity background, of working with the non-profits by photographing their fundraisers. ... And so, that is how I got introduced to the non-profits here in Dayton. I went to work for Lexis-Nexis and sat on their community cares board which, they give out grant money, locally. And so the non-profits would write the grants asking for support for some type of an issue, to start a program, so I became educated through reading through all of those grant applications and sitting on that board. Which was great, because I got to learn a lot about the services and the needs of the Dayton area, so that was my start.

Daddy, I want you to give this to the family that needs help.

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

I often Blog about happenings at Hannah’s Treasure Chest or things that I come across and that have moved me, this story speaks for itself.

On a mid-December 2010 Saturday morning, a 6 year-old Beavercreek girl’s heart and mind met to help enhance the life of a family in need. While discussing with my daughter, Moira Fudge, that daddy’s company, Elements IV Interiors, had adopted a family for Christmas, she told me she would be right back and ran to her bedroom. A few minutes later she returned with her piggy bank and set it on the coffee table. She said, “Daddy, I want you to give this to the family that needs help.”

...She went on to explain that she knew she would be getting presents for Christmas and that she wanted to help our adopted family have a nice Christmas too. I knew that Moira’s piggy bank had been collecting change for the past six months, but I was shocked when I counted the money for donation - $54.98!

While I was working from home, I took a moment and stopped to watch the snow and the kids playing outside, enjoying the weather. ... It reminded me that there could be children out still enjoying the snow, but not wearing proper attire – maybe a lightweight jacket or no coat at all, potentially no gloves or hat, or maybe even boots.

...After I finished watching the playful youth outside my front window, I went to the closet and looked at the many coats that hung there. ... After all, they would do more good if they weren’t just hanging in my closet. Then I looked down to realize several pairs of boots that no longer fit my daughter, that I simply did not have the time to pack away and get to Hannah’s Treasure Chest. This began my adventure and now I happily have a large bag of hats, gloves, boots and winter coats that will be accompanying me to work tomorrow. All things that I had simply not taken the time to clean out and get to the warehouse to be donated and distributed to someone else in need.

Maybe this latest winter snow storm will prompt you to think about all that you are blessed with and take the time to clean out a little, pare down a bit, or simply donate those things that no longer fit. That one warm winter item could put a smile on a child’s face because he or she can go out and play in the snow and stay warm while enjoying the winter wonderland.

Donate to Hannah's Treasure Chest

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

On top of that, 12.5 million have a home, but not enough to give them clothes and shoes to wear, books to read, or toys to play with. In the state of Ohio, one in three children live at or below the poverty level.

It made we want to go out and invite them all to my house to just laugh, play and decorate for a wonderful and joyous time of the year. Many of us know abundance, maybe not like in the past because of current economic conditions, but we still know abundance.

...What if we took just one of those “extras” and gave it up for just a day, maybe a week… and donated the money we would have spent to help someone in need, real need. Providing a child a warm winter coat, a blanket to curl up with at night, or a school uniform. The ability to provide that one thing that would shoot their self-esteem right to the moon! I can just see the smile on their face - ear to ear and brighter than the North Star!

...Consider what sacrifice you can make this holiday season to “pay it forward” for someone less fortunate. What is something that you can give up to give a precious gift to another?

This past weekend I had the opportunity to sit for awhile (something that doesn’t happen often) and take it all in. People were in a hurry, rushing in and out, multi-taking, trying to get everything done so that they could do more, be more places. All too often, we are so focused on getting it all done, we forget to stop and hold the door for someone else. Can you imagine what would happen if the next time you went through a door you stopped and held it instead for the person coming the opposite direction or the person behind you? That one thoughtful deed could transfer into that person holding the door for someone else, or giving up the closer parking space to another person who is clearly in a hurry – who knows what the possibility might be.

...What would it be like if we all held the door for one another?

I see thoughtful people every day in the volunteer work done at Hannah’s Treasure Chest. Teamwork, family, service, and thoughtfulness – it’s endless – it’s amazing – it really is contagious!

It’s a common myth that we are open to the public and the families and children come in to our facility and “shop” for what they need. We actually work with local area agencies, schools, churches and other social service organizations to distribute all of the wonderful things to the children that need those most.

Hannah’s Treasure Chest has established partnerships with many local agencies that work with at-risk youth. The child’s needs are assessed during in-take, a home visit or during participation in a program. The social worker, school counselor, outreach pastor or liaison with Hannah’s Treasure Chest then mails in a request for the child’s needs pertaining to clothing, furniture, toys, school supplies, hygiene items, etc.

...A dedicated Hannah’s Treasure Chest volunteer then fills the request and packages it for delivery to the family.

...This could be in the form of a child’s table and chairs, books and toys for their waiting room. It could be extra clothing for the emergency on-site closet they keep for children to access while participating in a program. Another way we help is to provide incentives for families to participate in one of our partners programs or to attend a special event.

In 1999 I was working for Lexis Nexis and sat on their Community Cares Board which awarded employee grant money to local non-profits. As I participated in this committee, I became aware of a lot of local non-profits that worked with at-risk youth. This was an amazing educational experience for me, had I not sat on this committee, I would not have known about many of these wonderful organizations.

...Our friends were very generous and passed on many of their baby items to us, in an effort to rid their basements of the buildup of items they had stored over the years. The only thing was that Hannah would be the first grandchild and the first great grandchild in our family, so we really lacked for nothing. In having the nursery already done and everything imaginable for a new born awaiting her arrival, there was a lot of extra stuff occupying my parking space in the garage.

...In an effort to gain back an inside parking space during the Dayton winter, I began brokering out the items which had been given to us to the agencies that I had become familiar with through the Community Cares Board. ... A simple phone call to donate a crib or other items turned into a longer conversation on the many needs of an agency for a number of clients. Getting rid of the items in my garage was not going to be a problem – or so I thought.

How is Hannah’s Treasure Chest different from other agencies?

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

This is a very interesting question posed to me on a frequent basis. A lot of things come to mind, but I think the most prominent is how we run financially. Hannah’s Treasure Chest’s entire operating budget is approximately $145,000. That’s equivalent to one line item in the budgets of most other non-profits. It’s with this frugal budget that we cover rent, utilities, phone, internet, salaries, program costs, printing, everything and anything associated with running the organization. It amazes most people who come in and think we are a $600,000 - $750,000 annual budget agency. We run like a business and barter where we can. Hannah’s makes the most of the win-win situation through partnerships and utilizing what we have. ...I think we dwell on the fact that we are only one person and that we cannot possibly make a difference or do anything as one person.

...The speaker had written 80 books and is an expert in his field, yet his talk seemed to dwell on all of the “horrible and pessimistic” facts surrounding values of people in our society today versus 50 years ago. Our society has definitely changed but why dwell on the “downer” facts; tell me about the great things that we are doing today and how we have become a better society.

...During the nearly 9 years that Hannah’s Treasure Chest has existed, I have watched individuals time and again do something and do it well. I have watched people bring awareness to our cause because they are simply good at talking to people and drawing them to us. I have watched people come in the door and say that they really don’t have anything but time to give but they are willing to give that.

...Others who do not have time to give do what they can in other ways. ... They do not refuse their advice as it is something they can do, no matter how busy their schedules.

I’d like to encourage anyone reading this to remember that, although you are only one person, you can do something.

Nonprofits are in Trouble, Volunteers Can Help

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

As we all know, these economic times within our country are hard and it's no different here in Dayton. We are seeing an increase in need for our services and are distributing more goods than ever before.

...We can even take your donation online so that you don't have to find your check book, an envelope and then pay for postage!

...The professor at New York University's Wagner School of Public Service predicted that 100,000 nonprofits would close as a result of the economic downturn.

...Nearly five months later, a survey of 986 U.S. nonprofits supports Light's prediction, and paints a shocking portrait of the sector that is continually asked to do more with less.

...	•	Thirty-one percent don't have enough money to cover operating expenses for more than one month, and another 31% can cover less than three months.

...	•	A staggering 93% of organizations that provide essential amenities, such as food and shelter, anticipate an increased demand for their services in 2009.

...When asked how they intended to cope with this downturn, 39% of nonprofits cited they plan to reduce or eliminate programs, and 41% plan to reduce staff or salaries.

...With the help of volunteers, these organizations can continue to provide the important services that keep our communities afloat in troubled times. Just five hours at your local food pantry, shelter, or health clinic is the equivalent of donating $101.25, and can make a world of difference to a neighbor in need.

Spring has sprung!

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

The weather is changing and we are switching over the items in the warehouse from fall/winter to spring/summer. Our 6,000 square feet of warehouse space in Centerville provides a place for people to volunteer and donate their gently used items. It is also a place for our caseworkers, school counselors and nurses to find the basic goods their clients need to succeed in improving their lives. By recycling your baby and childrens goods you can help the needy to thrive in this failing economy while saving space in our local landfills.

...It's also spring and we are seeing the trees and flowers in bloom, the sun is shining (more now at least) and it's warming up. It's the perfect time to clean out those closets and drawers and recycle the clothing that is too small or the toys that aren't being played with.

As well, if you find yourself with a little bit of time, stop on by and lend a helping hand.

...I am excited about the impact that we are having on the local community and the thousands of children we are assisting.

...We have a tremendous network on agencies that we work with to help benefit local families in need. You can also donate your household goods, artwork and collectibles to us and we will turn your items into treasure, as we work with a local auctioneer to help us raise funds.

What an impact!

<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

During the month of January we finalize all of our facts and figures for the previous year. We add up all of the items we have distributed, calculate the benefit to the community, count everything in the warehouse for inventory and close out the books for the previous year.

Here are some noteworthy facts from 2008 for Hannah’s Treasure Chest:

121,117 items were distributed by Hannah’s Treasure Chest into the local community with a value of $409,128. ... Our busiest month was October in which 15,959 items were distributed. The agency receiving the biggest benefit from us received over $57,000 worth of items for children in their programs.

Giving Angels was the biggest it has ever been with 10,100 items being distributed to approximately 1500 children, including gifts at parties around the Miami Valley. Including gift cards, which are given to provide a holiday dinner to the family, over $145,000 worth of goods was distributed during this program alone in 2008.

...Our volunteer base continues to grow and we are well over 30 regular volunteers now. To start our year off right Hannah’s Treasure Chest was named as a benefactor for the Miami Valley Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Week held January 25 – 30, 2009 with 56 area restaurants participating. ... What a fun way to raise money for charities and do it while dining in some of Dayton’s best restaurants.

...(On my way to this event I received an email that we had been chosen to receive a grant from Ikea! ... We met amazing people and introduced Hannah’s to quite a few who didn’t know us or had heard of us but didn’t know what we did.

...The food was second to none – here’s what I had the opportunity to sample: Bahn Mai Thai Café had a magnificent Spicy and Non-Spicy Laotian Chicken Salad with Sticky Rice. ... If you go to a Dayton Dragons game check this place out before or after the game and definitely get some Dragon Toes!

...If you get the chance to dine out, I strongly recommend you try out some of these amazing restaurants and help to make a difference in the local community at the same time.

We are thrilled to have been chosen as one of their charities and are happy to help promote this tremendous event. Like any other journey, it has become more meaningful because of the special people in my life who have shared this trip with me thus far. ... I enjoy learning about people and empowering them so that they may give back - to give of their time, their talents and their treasures to help those less fortunate.

There are those I have shared the vision of Hannah’s Treasure Chest, who in turn have encouraged me to pursue the vision of helping others in need.

...There are those I have shared the vision of Hannah’s Treasure Chest, which in turn have given an endless number of hours to help those in need. ... Their labor is one of love and they have taught me that the only way you can truly get more out of life is to give part of yourself away.

...There are those I have shared the vision of Hannah’s Treasure Chest, which in turn have contributed funds so that we could use it as a tool to be a force for good and to change the lives of others. ... They have been empowered to make a difference through the use of their treasures and I have been inspired.

Many of these special people are here with me today and continue to dream with me about the future impact we will make in the lives of others. ...
